Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Written on February 6, 2011. Written by .

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance weaves philosophical monologues into a simple first-person narrative about a cross-country motorcycle trip to achieve a very unique atmosphere. The simplicity of the main plot combined with the extensive contemplative tone make for a very peaceful reading experience. The philosophy is fairly deep, but not in the sense of being difficult to understand. It is deep in the sense that it is not the type of thing that people think about often. At some points, it starts to sound like the ramblings of a mad-man, but insanity is one of the core themes of the book. While it may not be the best way to learn about philosophy, it is amazing that it successfully uses philosophy as entertainment.
