I picked up this book not because I was feeling depressed, but because it was the first book I found that focused on the connection between food and mood. Cousens is basically a raw foods hippie type, but this book seems pretty professional overall. It makes an interesting distinction between fast and slow oxidizers, the two requiring different protein to carbohydrate ratios. It also discusses the biochemical pathways that produce neurotransmitters and how those neurotransmitters affect mood. Since essential amino acids are precursors to these pathways, deficiencies in these amino acids can produce negative effects on mood.
