Just Work

Written on July 4, 2011. Written by .

This book discusses the issue of work in general, that is the fact that most people are effectively forced into jobs that they may or may not want to be in. The book upset me at the beginning when it seemed to advocate a guaranteed minimum wage for everyone without discussing the implementation at all. […]

Common Lisp

Written on July 4, 2011. Written by .

This really was a gentle introduction, it could probably be well understood by middle school students. While it was a little slow, I liked that I was able to get a good general feel for the Lisp language without straining my brain.

What to Eat

Written on July 4, 2011. Written by .

This book had a large emphasis on the politics of food. It didn’t go very deep into the science and seemed to avoid taking a strong stance on almost everything. It was good for getting an impression of what is well accepted in the field of nutrition because if this author accepts it, then there […]

Freakonomics

Written on July 4, 2011. Written by .

This book started out pretty good, but ended up losing steam after the introduction. It is basically a collection of psychological/sociological insights that were gained by means of the quantitative analytical tools of economics. It talks about several random examples, which are fairly interesting, but the presentation seems drawn out and occasionally boring. It discusses […]

Depression Free for Life

Written on July 3, 2011. Written by .

I picked up this book not because I was feeling depressed, but because it was the first book I found that focused on the connection between food and mood. Cousens is basically a raw foods hippie type, but this book seems pretty professional overall. It makes an interesting distinction between fast and slow oxidizers, the […]

What is Zen

Written on July 3, 2011. Written by .

This was a really short little book that talks about some of the basic concepts in Zen. It is the type of book that doesn’t try to be comprehensive or organized, but just picks and chooses a few of the more interesting things to discuss. Watts does a good job of making Zen more understandable […]

Vagabonding

Written on July 3, 2011. Written by .

This is a guidebook for vagabonds. It is mostly focused on low-budget international travel, with a slight bias towards places with really low living expenses. A big part of it is just about the mentality of vagabonding, preparing to go, convincing yourself to do it, and how to enjoy it. There is some practical advice, […]

How to Win Friends and Influence People

Written on July 3, 2011. Written by .

It took me a long time to read this book because it never seemed that important to me. I did like it though. It had a very positive and happy message. The advice was extremely basic and perhaps even obvious, but by reading about it you end up thinking more about your own behavior, which […]

The Way of Zen

Written on July 3, 2011. Written by .

Although this book wasn’t organized the way I would have preferred, it still did contain a great deal of insight into the philosophy of Zen Buddhism. I was able to piece together a fairly detailed picture of Zen by compiling scattered notes from several different chapters.

The Unabomber Manifesto

Written on July 3, 2011. Written by .

I totally agree with the gripes that he had about society, but I completely disagree as to the scale of the problem and his proposed solutions. He acted as if there was no way to enjoy life given the problems of society, but I think there is still plenty of room for living an enjoyable […]
